Gion Matsuri Festival began in the Heian Period (the 9th century), praying for protection from plagues and evil. This festival is one of the most famous festivals in Japan, held at Kyoto. The festival continues for one month from July 1st to the 31st. This is the main event of the festival, Yamaboko Junko. In the Yamaboko Junko, many floats with a halberd (Yama or Hoko), which are decorated with imported tapestries or on which dolls are mounted, parade through the streets in Kyoto.
