Sennyuji Temple

Sennyuji Temple is the head temple of the Sennyuji school of the Shingon sect, and is also called “Mitera” as the family temple of the Imperial Household. The opening time of this temple is unknown, and some people say that Kukai, the founding priest of the Shingon sect, initiated it (the Heian Period, 794-1185). Actually, however, it might have been opened in the Kamakura Period (1185-1336), by Getsurin-Daishi (1166-1227) as a training hall of eclectic study of various Buddhist schools. The temple stands on Mt. Tsukinowa in Higashiyama 36 Peaks. The temple buildings are in a totally quiet atmosphere, and when you stand there, you should feel that you stand in another world.
